01 — THE VISION

Creating a Lived-In Sanctuary

Every homeowner dreams of a space that truly reflects their personality—a place where style meets comfort, and every corner tells a story. When I purchased my suburban Durham home, it had good bones but was trapped in generic builder-grade finishes and outdated design choices. The walls were a sea of safe grays and beiges, the lighting was uninspired, and the space felt more like a rental than a reflection of who I am.

Partnering with the incredible team at Clean Slate RDU, I embarked on a journey to transform this "dumpy suburban home" into a modern, stylish sanctuary. The goal wasn't just renovation—it was transformation. I wanted bold color, thoughtful design, natural materials, and spaces that could accommodate both my creative pursuits and my beloved pets. What emerged is a home that seamlessly blends moody sophistication with warm, livable comfort.

02 — DRAMATIC ENTRY

First Impressions Matter

The entry and staircase are the first impression of any home. We completely reimagined this space, replacing traditional wood railings with sleek black metal cable railings, adding warm wood accents on the stairs, and creating architectural interest with modern lighting and a bold design statement.

03 — KITCHEN REVOLUTION

Where Form Meets Function

The kitchen went from a safe, standard white-and-gray builder setup to a dramatic, sophisticated space featuring matte black cabinets, walnut wood accents, under-cabinet lighting, and a stunning show-stopping arched doorway that connects to the rest of the home. This is where form truly meets function.

04 — DINING TRANSFORMATION

From Generic to Gorgeous

The dining space evolved from a bland, forgettable room into a warm gathering place with rich colors, carefully curated lighting, and design details that make every meal feel special. Strategic paint choices and thoughtful furniture placement transformed the entire feel of this room.

05 — LIVING SPACES

Every Room Tells a Story

Beyond the dramatic transformations, every bedroom, bathroom, and living space was designed with intention. From spa-like bathrooms to cozy guest rooms, each space balances aesthetics with livability.

06 — DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

The Principles That Guided Us

Bold Color Choices

We rejected safe neutrals in favor of rich, moody tones—deep greens, warm blacks, and natural wood that create drama and personality.

Natural Materials

Walnut wood accents, metal cable railings, and stone surfaces bring warmth and authenticity to modern design.

Architectural Details

Statement archways, dramatic lighting, and custom millwork transform standard spaces into memorable experiences.

Pet-Friendly Design

Beautiful doesn't mean impractical. Durable finishes, smart layouts, and pet-specific features ensure this home works for the whole family.

07 — THE REAL CRITICS

Built for Pets Who Deserve the Best

A home isn't complete without considering its furry residents. From built-in pet perches to durable, stylish finishes that can handle daily life with dogs and cats, every design decision factored in the comfort and safety of my pets.

08 — KEY LEARNINGS

What This Project Taught Me

Trust Your Vision

Every designer, contractor, and well-meaning friend will have opinions. The homes that stand out are the ones where the owner trusts their instincts and makes bold choices rather than playing it safe.

Partner with People Who Get It

Clean Slate RDU didn't just execute my vision—they enhanced it. Finding collaborators who understand your aesthetic and share your commitment to quality makes all the difference.

Design for How You Actually Live

Magazine-perfect rooms that don't accommodate pets, hobbies, or daily life aren't worth it. Great design serves life, not the other way around.

This home proves that suburban doesn't have to mean standard. With vision, bold choices, and the right partners, any space can become a sanctuary that reflects who you really are.
